About Traditional Chinese Medicine
Acupuncture is one of the core methods within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and has been used to treat and prevent diseases for thousands of years. By 300 BC, the TCM foundational theory had been established, marked by the publication of the comprehensive medical text Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic). Later, in 282 AD, Huangfumi authored the first dedicated acupuncture monograph, Zhen Jiu Jia Yi Jing (Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion), representing a major milestone in the formalization of acupuncture practice. Over thousands of years of clinical experience — now increasingly supported by modern scientific research — TCM has remained a major medical system in China and has gained global recognition for its holistic, natural, and integrative approach to healing.
The major theoretical frameworks of TCM and acupuncture include Yin and Yang theory, the Five Elements theory, the Zang-Fu Organs theory, the Qi, Blood and Body Fluid theory, and the Meridians and Collaterals theory. These frameworks provide simplified yet comprehensive descriptions of how the body’s parts, networks, and systems interconnect and function together to maintain balance, harmony, and healthy development throughout a person’s life. They serve as essential guides for both diagnosis and treatment.
Using the four main diagnostic methods — observation, listening/smelling, questioning, and pulse analysis — a TCM practitioner conducts a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s condition. This process, known as syndrome differentiation, determines the most appropriate individualized treatment strategy. The primary goals of treatment are to restore internal balance, strengthen the body’s defenses and resilience, enhance self‑repairing capacity, improve circulation, nourish or reinforce deficiencies, clear blockages or stagnation, and regulate warming, cooling, ascending, or descending functions as needed. When these goals are achieved, pain decreases, immunity improves, wounds heal, weakness resolves, and overall vitality increases.
